Program Description

The Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program is designed to encourage eligible customers to install high efficiency, gas saving products by providing cash incentives, while educating customers about the benefits of energy efficiency.

Funded by ratepayers of Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas, the Program is guided by the Citizens Utility Board, City of Chicago, Environmental Law and Policy Center, Illinois Attorney General's Office, and Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas.

Who Is Eligible?

The Program is limited to current customers of Peoples Gas or North Shore Gas.

Customers must be on Service Classification No. 1 (Residential) or No. 2 (General Service). Small commercial customers on either of these Service Classifications are eligible, provided that the qualifying equipment they install is not commercial-sized (must be residential) and meets the Program's requirements.

What are the Program's Requirements?

There are many Program requirements not listed on this page. Thus, please be sure to read the entire rebate application - Chicagoland Home Efficiency Rebate Application or Chicagoland Heating Rebate Application - for comprehensive information on Program requirements.

Why Aren't Clothes Washers on the List Anymore?

Clothes washers purchased after October 31, 2009 are not eligible for Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program Rebates. The program is transitioning towards products traditionally offered through contractors and that contribute significantly to savings and comfort through heating and water heating.

What Are The Installation Requirements?

Please see the complete rebate application here for more information.

Attic and wall insulation can be either installed by a professional contractor or self-installed.

All other products, including water heaters, furnaces, and boilers must be installed by a professional contractor to manufacturer specifications and code and all products are limited to one unit per customer.

When Do The Products Need To Be Purchased?

Products need to be purchased and installed on or after November 1, 2009 and by January 15, 2010.

The offer is valid from November 1, 2009 - January 15, 2010, or until funds are depleted, whichever comes first. All applications must be postmarked no later than 60 days after the purchase, or by February 15, 2010, whichever comes first.

Where Can I Find A Qualified Contractor?

For information on how to find trained contractors for installing efficient products, visit www.mwalliance.org/peec - where you will find a contact list of contractors specializing in energy efficiency. Further, if you are a contractor interested in joining the list, please also visit www.mwalliance.org/peec to learn how you can join the Participating Energy Efficiency Contractor (PEEC) Network.

Where Can I Purchase A Qualified Product?

You can purchase qualifying products wherever water heaters, insulation, and gas furnaces and boilers are sold, (including local retailers, online retailers, or through a professional contractor).

Only equipment meeting the Program efficiency guidelines will be eligible for the rebate (so please check the rebate application here for details on the Program efficiency levels and requirements). The offer is limited to one quantity of each measure per household.

I am a landlord of a property located in Peoples Gas and/or North Shore Gas territory. Am I eligible for the rebates?

Yes. If the gas account(s) is in your name, please complete and submit the rebate application. You will be limited to one quantity per measure per gas account.

If you are applying for a rebate for a residence you own, but the gas account number is in your tenant's name, you must supply the following information:
  • Installation address
  • Gas account holder's name
  • Gas account holder's account number
  • Current tax bill or mortgage statement providing proof of ownership
You will be limited to one quantity per measure per gas account.

How Do I Apply For A Rebate?

There are two ways to apply: Apply online here, or simply download the Chicagoland Home Efficiency Rebate Application or Chicagoland Heating Rebate Application, print it out, and mail it in.

Will a Rebate Impact My Taxes?

Rebates for residential energy efficiency products are not considered taxable by the IRS.

Can I Get A Tax Credit For My Energy Efficient Product Installation?

Yes. Tax credits - at 30% of the cost, up to $1,500 - are currently available for products purchased and installed in existing homes in 2009 and 2010. For more details, visit www.energystar.gov/taxcredits

I Heard There Is A State Rebate For Appliances And Furnaces. Can I Apply For Both The Chicagoland Rebate And The State Rebate?

Customers will be able to apply for both Chicagoland Natural Gas Savings Program rebates and ARRA rebates for qualified measures. For more information on the incentives available through the Illinois ENERGY STAR Appiance Rebate Program, courtesy of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, please see the information here.
